If your Compaq machine has a 10/100 NIC and you're connecting to a 10/100
hub or switch, auto-negotiation isn't likely to work. You need to force the
computer's NIC to either 10Mbps or 100Mbps (mine only works at 10).

To do this when, you get to the set up the network setup part and load the
module pass the option "options=0x10".

If you aren't given that opportunity, change to a second console with
<ctrl><F2> and activate it. do "rmmod eepro100" then "modprobe eepro100
options=0x10".
