Thanks! sure enough, I checked the config file for when I compiled the kernel and it doesn't have either hotplug or hotplug_PCI set. I guess I'll download a new kernel and compile it (I've never figured out how to upgrade the kernel using debian). Hopefully that will sove this problem. Thanks again, Ric
