here's a quick checklist what you should check before continue:

o you did run lilo after installing the kernel image?

o file /boot/vmlinuz-<your_image> should print out if the image is a
  bzImage or whatever.

o dpkg-deb -c kernel-image*.deb prints out a file list of your package.
  is everything there? also including the modules?

o /vmlinuz points to the right image in /boot?

o is `uname -r` the same as your old kernel? if true, move
  /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ to a safe place before installing the image
