to configure X, run "lspci -vv| less" find your video hardware. there
will be manufacturer and a chipset listed, usually the manufacturer is
listed first and the chipset is listed second (as far as the names are
concerned).

this will give you a starting point for working with your hardware.

run "dpkg-reconfigure xfree86-common" or 
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" as often as needed or manually edit 
your config file as often as needed. (i cant remember which package you
want to reconfigure, so i listed both)

/var/log/XFree86.0.log will tell you which config file X is using.
