Re: Debian OS for my PC , 2nd POSTING

I recently have taken an interest with Linux Operating System and

popularity of your OS is gaining in our place ie., Bangalore with
several institutions and home PCs taking to Linux based systems.
By the repeat of this posting, the implication is that you didn't read
the replies you got earlier. I can only assume that means that you are
not subscribed to this list, and therefore expected a CC: of the
messages, which is generally frowned upon (as per the "Code of Conduct"
at http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/ - "When replying to messages on
the mailing list, do not send a carbon copy (CC) to the original poster
unless they explicitly request to be copied."). In accordance with that
assumption, I'm CC:ing this message to you.
You can find the previous thread at the mailing list archives for May
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/debian-user-200304/thrd5.html
- then use your browser's search feature to find "joy").
You might want to provide the additional information asked for there
(such as amount of RAM, are C: & D: separate drives or just partitions,
etc) and then go from there.
I would be much obliged if you could offer suggestions as to which of
your Debian Versions is best suitable for my PC taking into account
the speed of computer. Ishould be able to use all my above devices as
well. Based on your OS, if it is required to use other softwares from
other vendors to run the above/any devices kindly indicate the same.
But to answer your basic question of which Debian version, I'd start
with Stable. If that doesn't work with some of your hardware, it's
trivial to upgrade to Testing, and if that doesn't work, it's trivial
again to upgrade to Unstable (assuming you have a reliable, and
preferably fast, network connection, or the requisite CDs otherwise).
Still, your best bet is to google for specific hardware compatibility,
since if a certain piece of hardware works with Linux in general
(Redhat, Mandrake, Gentoo), it's pretty much guaranteed to work with Debian.
