Have you installed x-window-system-core?  It's the bare minimum needed
to have X actually work on a local system.

Use the 'reportbug' program instead.

If you don't know the package name, use 'general'.  reportbug does this
for you.

xserver-xfree86 is the package name, 'dpkg -l packagename' gives you the
version number of packagename.  I'm almost certain this is due to you
not having installed X correctly, though.
