It's too late to help you in your current predicament, but it's worthwhile to download and install Libtrash, which creates a trashcan for Linux. I'm not sure it would help if you managed to delete your /home or /var directory, but for most dumb mistakes where you type "rm -f *" in the wrong directory, it will save your posterior. - Robert
