Installing Debian via floppy/network on Gigabyte 8PE667-Ultra2 mainboard

Dear group,

I just replaced my very old 200 MHz Pentium I computer with a faster system based on the Gigabyte 8PE667-Ultra2 mainboard (http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-8PE667%20Ultra%202.htm).

Having not yet received the CD-ROM drive for this system, my intention is to install Debian using the approach via floppy discs (rescue, root, drivers-1, drivers-2), and then to proceed the installation via the local network (internet gateway).

I kept close to the debian installation manual, that is, got the current release (3.0.?), 1.44 MB disk images in "compact" flavour. Everything went well so far, however I'm stuck with the network driver for the on-board ethernet controller of the 8PE667.
The ethernet controller on that board is a Intel 82540EM.

Well, although I'm not entirely new to Linux, I have currently no clue what to do next. Any hints how I can get the on-board ethernet to work are much appreciated! :-)

Thank you very much!

Best,
Carsten
