Can't mount cdrom anymore

A couple of weekends ago I compiled a new 2.4.20 kernel. Today I found out that I can no longer mount the cdrom. I get this error:

~$ mount /cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device

Any ideas? Did I miss something? As an aside, I also compiled a new kernel for my desktop machine with (almost identical) options, and I have no problems with the cdrom on it.
