Dunno if this works on XP, but you might take a look at loadlin.exe. 
There is a mini-HOWTO on using it on Win 95/98/ME.  It is a DOS program 
that will start the Linux boot process from DOS, and I have used it 
sucessfully in the past (but not on XP).
