The only condition I know, under which switching between X and console will
hang your computer, is with the original nvidia-drivers. Since this
happened to a friend of mine, I don't know if this is still the case,
though.
OTOH I (and my friend,too) am using framebuffer for the console, so the
issue might only occur with text-console...
