unless you changed the runlevel your in runlevel 2 not 3 or 5. debian
doesn't make a distinction between runlevels 2,3,4,5.

gpm is what is used to control the mouse in the console. typical
config:

gpm -t imps2 -m /dev/psaux

for a ps/2 mouse connected to a ps/2 port

if you want to use gpm AND X at the same time then look into finding
docs on how to get X to use /dev/gpmdata (they are everywhere though
I've never needed this configuration myself so I don't know off hand).

if your mouse is USB then the device would be /dev/input/mice

be sure nothing else is using the mouse port(e.g. X) when loading
gpm. most likely it sounds like your using an incompadible protocol
with gpm, imps2 seems to be one of the better ones to use.
