Xscreensaver returns "no screensaver started on display :0.0"

Hi all,
thanks to everyone who helped with the system startup problem I had a while back.
(somehow my root disk got corrupted; i made a new one and am good to go.)

I have a new situation that doesn't seem to be covered in the manuals. I have to admit i
read the manpage xscreensaver and xauth but it went right over my head, so i apologize if the
answer to this question is there.
I installed xscreensaver on my machine and when i try to view the demos i get the error message:
"no screensaver started on display :0.0"
Im running Potato with BlackboxWM in 1024x768x8 bit color, i only have 1Mb video;
the faq for xscreensaver said something about an .xscreensaverrc file, but i cant find it on my
system.

What do i need to do to get screensaver running or is it a lost cause?
