ntp.conf question

The file /etc/ntp.conf does not contain any server entries but does include a note saying these are entered auto generated, use dpkg-reconfigure to modify these lines. dpkg-reconfigure ntp simply returns the command prompt. dpkg-reconfigure ntpdate allows the entry of a server - I entered time-a.nist.gov and gave an immediate response "running ntpdate to synchronize the clock" however ntp.conf was unchanged.

I would like the ntpd daemon to keep the clock updated. I could try editing the ntp.conf file with vi but the auto generated note suggests there is a better way to do this.
