I think just about every modern IDE/ATAPI CD-RW works in Linux now,
through cdrecord and cdrdao's generic-mmc drivers. Again, always check
before buying. Many inexpensive drives available in the USA are remarked
Lite-On drives, which work great under Linux.
One thing you will have trouble with is upgrading firmwares. Many
utilities for upgrading firmware *only* work within Windows. Usually,
though, you'd only need to upgrade your firmware to get better media
compatibility. Many vendors won't support you if you have problems if
you tell them you use Linux, either.
