Mail User Agent, "the program you use to read mail". The other
related acronym that comes up a lot is MTA, for Mail Transport Agent,
"the program that communicates with other computers to move mail

If it really is an IMAP account, there are a number of mail clients
out there that can access it directly. It looks like you can only get
this if you have Lycos Mail Plus and pay US$20/year. But given this,
you can use programs like Mutt or Evolution to access your mail
without a Web browser.

(...and a well-set-up IMAP system will allow this; you should be able
to read your mail both in mutt and via Lycos' Web system.)
