Re: xdm but not startx crashes on ATI Sapphire Rage 128 Pro

Hello,

I put Debian testing/sarge on a desktop PC with ATI Sapphire Rage 128 Pro
and ran xf86config to get XF86 4.2.1 up, which correctly recognized the
card and monitor and set the Device Driver to "ati". I'm using icewm-gnome
on top of X. I now have X running with startx but not with xdm - xdm cycles
through several X screens and blanks and then gives up. The xdm log as well
as the XF86 log, contain errors like

(EE) R128(0): No DFP detected
Symbol drmFreeBugs from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is
unresolved!
... two more unresolved symbols ..

What puzzles me is that startx apparently gets over this error but xdm
crashes with

X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
...
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server.

I tried replacing "ati" with "r128" for the Driver with no change.
Of course, to add to my confusion, I cannot run startx as an ordinary
user. Do I need an Xwrapper?

Try setting the "allowes users=" line in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config to:
allowed_users=console
