That's right.  It's bad to run more than you have to as root, and the
default installation deliberately prevents you from doing something
stupid.  If you need to do something as root, open a terminal and type
su.  If you need to run an X program for a moment as root (like to
enable non-root configuration in XCDRoast, etc), do this:

$ xhost +local:localhost
$ su
# <your command> &
# exit

Never log in as root when you don't have to, su or sudo instead.
