Re: Sound on via8233

lspci (might need to install it) will be very helpful.

I have a similar board and this is the output, less add on cards...

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super South] (rev 40)
00:07.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UHCI USB (rev 16)
00:07.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UHCI USB (rev 16)
00:07.4 Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] (rev 40)
00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

I have compiled my own kernel, these configs where what I needed when I
built my it...

CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX=y
CONFIG_MIDI_VIA82CXXX=y
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=y
CONFIG_SOUND_TRACEINIT=y
# CONFIG_SOUND_DMAP is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_AD1816 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_SGALAXY is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ADLIB is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ACI_MIXER is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CS4232 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_SSCAPE is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_GUS is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_VMIDI=y

so alsa does not seem _required_ (it may work) but I seem to recall
sound did not work with the standard kernel.
