Dumb-founded that no one has pointed this out yet, I thought I may as well mention it before this thread ends. GIMP[at least the version in testing] does have a menu on the image window: it is the triangle in the upper left hand corner. Left-clicking it will open a drop-down menu equivalent to the context menu you get when right clicking the image.
