Debian 2.2 would be the _old_ stable (aka potato).

That would be the current stable release Debian 3.0, woody is it's
release name.

For the nVidia drivers, you'll want to get your system first working
with a 2.4.x kernel. For that, you'll probably want to upgrade your
system to the latest stable release (aka woody). Once there, install
the nvidia-glx-src and nvidia-kernel-src packages and follow their
instructions.
