First of all I recommend using ssh, especially if you travel across
different networks.

I don't know what your setup looks like, but you should have a look
at port forwarding.

This means that when a request comes in at a certain port, it will
be forwarded to another system. Normally sshd listens to port 22, so
you will have to configure the router to forward port 22
connections.
