Can you tell me why?
I used to use PLIP to have direct connection to computer that doesn't have NIC. I even have once use PLIP to install debian on an old laptop.

And yes,
NIC to NIC also possible. Just twisted the cable connection.

Normal UTP:
connect pin
 1 - 1
 2 - 2
 3 - 3
 6 - 6

Twisted / Cross UTP:
connect pin
 1 - 3
 2 - 6
 3 - 1
 6 - 2
