I think the problem is probably related to a recent upgrade of fontconfig.  
According to various posts on the list it is supposed to ask if you want to 
include bitmapped fonts in its configuration.  Well it never asked me, and 
left them out.  I expect that you were relying on a bitmapped font to provide 
you with Helvetica.

Try looking at /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and seeing if it includes all the <dir> 
that encompasses all of your fonts (subdirectories are automatically 
included).
