I added this to the begining of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:

FontPath	"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID/"
FontPath	"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/"

Whether I'm sure it actually works is another matter altogether ;-)
