Responding to my own post here as I got a command line cdrecord to work.
2 things I just found searching the web.
First was to turn off DMA.
Turn off DMA first:
hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 0 (off)
using_dma = 0 (off)
Second was to use the speed of 4 instead of 1 and it worked!!!!!!
Some burners I guess will only work at the max speed.
Now I don't mind using command line at all. In fact I like it.
Boy it has been a long day wresting with this project.
But I would like to know why xcdroast could possibly lock up my Debian
machine so hard??? Actually I recall trying to mount the /dev/cdrw
and it locked up that way as well so it is not xcdroast's fault.
