Re: (Newbie) Compatibility while I am fumbling.

Wow, thanks for the very clear, concise and informative answer. Let me ask while I am at it, if you think that I would still get this Debian support in a a stock 2.4 kernel in 3 rev. 1 or is there something specific with the hardware that you needed to use the 2.4.18-k7 kernel?

Cheers,

Brian

I use the same mother board you do. All the hardware on the board I've
tried to use works (which means I have no idea about the smart card
reader). The built in ethernet is supported with the via-rhine module,
the sound is supported via cmpci. The serial and parallel ports work
out of the box.
I disabled acpi, and apm does the job of powering on/off correctly and
the BIOS will automatically restart after a powerfailure
correctly. lm_sensors took a little work, but the sensors now work
fine. I used a USB keyboard and mouse so that works too (hotplug with
the usb-uhci driver).
I'm running 2.4.18-k7 and a stock Woody r1 system.

Best regards,
Shyamal
