if all you want is a generic serial console, edit /etc/inittab and uncomment
the line for serial console, telinit q and your done ..
if you want a more complete serial console e.g. with kernel support then
see the linux serial console HOWTO. I've only done it with LILO, but it's
pretty easy, though a reboot is required to enable it(provided you have
serial console enabled in the kernel config)
connect a null modem cable between the laptop and other machine, I use
minicom to communicate, it takes a bit of configuration to diable all
the modem-specific stuff(takes 1 minute).
