    More importantly how much memory is free when everything is loaded.  I'm
afraid there isn't much you can do about it if you're pushing the limits of
your RAM.  In those cases the kernel is going to swap to keep enough memory
free (5%?) whenever it can.  If you're actively using anything obviously it
isn't going to swap it out but when those pages go idle they'll be swapped. 
Esp. if some other process starts touching files and the like fairly regularly
which will cause caches to start growing.  If you are near the edge of your
RAM then the only thing you can do is reduce the amount you're using in one
way or another.
