Synaptic & can't run in console with "su" or "xhost local:root"

Hi Yall,

having finally, after many months of trying, finally gotten my Radeon 
going with the ATI drivers, Synaptic is now not happy!

Here is a cut & past of what is up-it used to work!

Any ideas?
