I had the same problem with my GeForce2 GTS. The solution I found was not to 
use Debconf for configuring my X as it seems to be somewhat buggy for this 
issue and tu use instead the good old 'xf86config'. It worked fine :-)). I 
just needed at the end to manually add the support for the wheel of my house.
