Look at the archives of a few days ago ;).
For example, if xdm is starting up then this is what I did:
# update-rc.d -f xdm remove
The problem with that is when you update X (apt-get dist-upgrade, for
example) again it will probably get reinstalled.
You can also probably remove the xdm package, but again I think it might
also get reinstalled on update.
