Woody, version incompatibility in /lib/modules

I got a copy of the first three CDs of the official distribution:

  678395904 Jan 12 10:23 debian-30r1-i386-binary-1_NONUS.iso
  676495360 Jan 12 10:26 debian-30r1-i386-binary-2.iso
  676790272 Jan 12 10:30 debian-30r1-i386-binary-3.iso

I'm trying to install it on a PC. I follow the installation instructions
up to and including creating the boot floppy. Then occurs the reboot
from the hard disk: modprobe generates an error message because it needs
/lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/modules.dep, but only version 2.2.20-idepci is
available. This error message then occurs so many times that it
completely hides all other messages and questions, and installation
cannot be completed.

Is it possible this distribution is bugged? Otherwise, what error could
I have made?
