Yikes. KDE on my boxes isn't that bad. I ran KDE happily off of a Dell
laptop with 128Mb with no problems. Of course I rarely run apps that have
full KDE integration in them. For example I don't run Konsole mainly because
it won't recognize my favorite terminal font (8x13bold). However, this has
something to do with it as well:

USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
grey 15249 0.1 0.1 2584 1440 ? RN 11:21 0:00 rxvt -bg black
grey 15252 2.2 1.2 20992 11528 ? SN 11:21 0:00 konsole

Screen doesn't add another 10Mb into the mix. Basically the same
functionality with the font I want. OTOH this box has nearly a Gig of RAM in
it so I might switch if konsole got it's font act together.

Also don't use Konquerer for web browsing. That's Opera.

grey 15309 5.6 0.9 17484 8676 ? SN 11:25 0:01 opera
grey 15310 17.7 1.6 24124 14844 ? SN 11:25 0:01 konqueror

Oddly enough I do use Sylpheed-Claws for email which is a GTK++ app.
KMail pales in comparison and I've done the Mutt thing and wasn't pleased with
it.

Not sure why those applications are so huge by comparison but you may want
to look into just replacing the applications instead of the whole desktop. I
mean nothing says you /must/ use Galeon and Gnome-terminal.
