Maybe you either had a power failure, or your kernel just crashed and rebooted itself.

Sometimes when I come into my office for the first time on a day, I find my Woody macintosh shut down. I've never worried about it too much.

I think /var/log/setuid.changes will tell you if anyone became root by setting their userid.

It won't tell you if someone has cracked your system in such a way as to be able to reboot you without becoming root though.
