Actually, I had already tried that before but I got a permission denied
error:
Removing portmap ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/portmap.prerm: /etc/init.d/portmap: Permission denied
dpkg: error processing portmap (--purge):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

Note that I was running apt-get as root!

I didn't persue this further before. But now after changing the
permissions on the /etc/init.d/portmap file it worked and apt-get would
remove it.

I am still a little confused because I only changed the permissions from
-rw-r--r-- to -rw-rw-rw- for it to work. I was running apt-get as root
so I would have thought there shouldn't be a permission problem to
remove the file.

Anyway, thanks for the help. It worked and portmap is gone and the rest
of my held back packages are now installed correctly.

Cheers.
Mark.
