removing the link is the proper way, nothing in the xdm script
is required beforehand if your using 'startx'. If 'startx'
gives you trouble post the log on a ftp or web site and link
to it in your next email.

I usually do

startx >&X.log

also include in the email a description of your hardware, and
prerably also post a copy of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to
a web or ftp site and link to that as well(including these
files in posts to a mailing list is usually not a good idea,
hogs bandwidth and disk space)
