No reason why not - although I am not doing it at the moment

You should understand that /sbin/lilo uses the file system in context of when 
you run it to read /etc/lilo.conf AND to write data about the placing of the 
file into the boot sector based in disk addresses.  When you see the lilo 
prompt etc at boot time that is NOT /sbin/lilo running but rather what it has 
already written into the boot block (ie the disk addressed).  As a result, to 
load the kernel image and the initrd image does not need a filesystem. 

As my previous post states - initrd runs some scripts which load the module 
for the root file system (ie ReiserFS) and the mounts it.  The pivot_root 
command does the switch.
