Netgear FA311 Ethernet Card Problem

I bought a Netgear FA311 Ethernet Card. On the box it claimed to support linux.

Starting with a blank computer I installed Debian 3.0 from an official CD set. I ran pppoeconf and got a message that there was a serious problem - an address was 1498 that should have been 1500.

Next I loaded kernel-source-2.4.18, built a new kernel with network support and rebooted. Now pppoeconf cannot find the ethernet card.

Finally, I looked at the software that came with the card and found it came with files to set up the card on any of three versions of Red Hat linux. The instructions called for compiling the modules with c using the included makefile. I presume that in time I can puzzle out and edit the instructions in the makefile to work with Woody. In the meantime, if anyone has already done this, I would appreciate help in getting this going so I can connect the computer to internet and get some urgently needed updates.
