What I wanted was a reliable way to write the time when the
connection was established and when it was terminated. If the number
is busy, no connection is established, which is kind of logical,
thus no information gets written to the file -- I've tested it with
dialling my own number. :) 
Of course, you cannot know that you've tried to establish a
connection or why it has failed; but that's not what I wanted. The
solution fits my needs perfectly.
