As root, while X is not running, try this: # XFree86 -configure Now, you can test this configuration by doing: XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new (I assume that you were in root's home directory when you ran the first command) This should give you a functional XF86Config that you can edit to your liking and then copy to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Hope this helps.
