I don't know how to fix it but I suggest you go to the command line and
see what is there. Or a file manager if you prefer. I would assume that
Mozilla just got its index files messed up somehow and maybe it provides
a way to fix it or maybe not. Some mail programs may have a menu item
somewhere like "rebuild mailbox".

Anyway, my Mozilla mail is kept in ~/nsmail, and here's what one
account's contents look like:

You can easily read the mail, save it, or whatever, in case you can't
fix Mozilla, with a mail client like mutt.
For example:

mutt -f Sent

opens the 'Sent' box, no problem.
