Don't use xpdf for docs with type 3 fonts, use gv. It does better
than either Acrobat or xpdf.
Better is not to have documents with type 3 fonts, which usually means
nothing more than educating people who use TeX or old versions of
ghostscript. I haven't seen any other pdfs with type 3 fonts (though
they might be out there somewhere).
