What a fabulous tip!  I've just done  acomplete reinstall.  The configuration of X has always been a nightmare.  However XFree86 -configure coupled with your suggestion means that for the first time ever X worked perfectly on the first go!

Many thanks - I wonder if its one of the Debian Newbie tips?
