I did go back to metalab.unc.edu and grab the j2re1.3 and that's working OK for me now.

Thanks very much for the link.  It (eventually) did the trick very well.

BTW: The package j2re-common is only found on this metalab.unc.edu link and was not a part of the normal sources.list packages.
