probably broadcast mode:
-broadcast
Send a broadcast to request the information needed
to bind to a specific NIS server. With this option,
/etc/yp.conf will be ignored.
back when I ran NIS though I preferred to put the ips of the servers
in yp.conf. Unless your slave servers change often, mine were always
the same address
