Mouse freezes after X logout - why?

Just upgraded to woody (PowerMac 7500 using kernel
2.2.20). Every time -- and I mean every time -- I
logout of an X session (regardless of which wm I'm
using) and am thrown back to gdm, my mouse freezes up.
 The keyboard works, but I loose the mouse entirely in
gdm and when I log back in.  I have to
/etc/init.d/./gdm stop and start again to get my mouse
back.

Any ideas about how I can eliminate this new Woody
"feature"?
