My guess is that he is directly reading the Mozilla mbox file; I do exactly the same thing from campus - I ssh to my Debian box and open up mutt to look at the Mozilla mailboxes as Mozilla is automatically downloading email to them. What I use to keep everything behaving nicely is the read-only option on mutt;
mutt -Rdoes the trick (I actually use mutt -Ry to read an index of mailbox files that correspond to Mozilla folders).
