tomsrtbt - yeah, but tar xzf foo doesn't work, nor does gunzip foo |
tar x.

Thanks, anyway. I've managed to boot normally again by manually
dissecting and copying in bits of the Debian 2.1 CD, and am trying to
use dselect to reinstall everything that may or may not be broken. It
more or less works but moans on a few packages that
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/foo is corrupt. Can I delete that, or do I
risk breaking anything if I do? (which I have asked in a separate post
"/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives", please reply there and consider this as
thanks for your suggestions.)
