1) Try "Full Maximisation" or "Maximise over slit" in the config menu.  
   Can you describe a situation that would explain this better, if I've 
   misunderstood?

Try fluxbox, for a different take on the blackbox idea.  I prefer it 
solely as it has a a better name.
